Fairuza Balk was named Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse at birth. She was born on May 21, 1974 in California. Balk is her mother's surname while Fairuza is the Persian word for 'turquoise'. She was chosen for Return to Oz by the Walt Disney in 1985. Though it was not her first acting job, it was what brought her to public attention. She received an Independent Spirit Award as best actress in 1992 for her acting in 'Gas Food Lodging', a film by Allison Anders. She got a lead role in 1994 the movie 'The Craft', with Rachel True, Neve Campbell, and Robin Tunney as co-stars. Her acting as a neo-Nazi in the 1998 film American History X is also notable. She writes poetry and fiction, and her favorite authors are William Burroughs, Isabel Allende, James Joyce, Mikhail Bulgakov, Oscar Wilde, Jung, Balzac, and Ernest Hemingway. Despite being dyslexic, she loves reading books. She plays piano and guitar and is a lead singer in a band. She is also into belly-dancing.
